Florida at a glance

Average premium

Standard deductible
$2,500
Applies to everyday claims.
Storm deductible — separate, and much larger
$6,000(2% of coverage)
What you would pay out of pocket on $300,000 of coverage before a storm claim pays anything — not the $2,500 above.
Insurer of last resort
Citizens Property Insurance Corporation
Florida's state-backed insurer of last resort. Eligibility is restricted by design: an owner must be unable in good faith to obtain comparable coverage in the private market, and cannot buy from Citizens if private coverage is available within 20% of the Citizens premium. Policy count has fallen sharply from its October 2023 peak of roughly 1.42 million to about 394,000 as carriers re-entered the market. Regulators approved a statewide average Citizens rate CUT of roughly 8.7-8.8% on multiperil policies (5.5% wind-only) effective July 1, 2026, reaching about 14% in Miami-Dade and Broward.
