Local tax in Alabama

The 2% state rate applies to automotive vehicles only — Alabama's general sales tax rate is 4%. Counties and municipalities levy their own additional automotive sales tax on top, published per-jurisdiction by ADOR. Automotive LEASES are taxed under a separate state rental tax of 1.5% on the lease payments, not under the 2% sales tax. Alabama also levies a recurring ad valorem tax on motor vehicles at registration: passenger vehicles are Class IV at a 15% assessment ratio, multiplied by the applicable local millage. ADOR publishes no representative statewide millage, so annualVehiclePropertyTax is omitted rather than half-populated.
