What a financed car actually costs out the door in Connecticut — the sales tax this state really charges, whether it credits your trade-in, and what the payment does to what you can borrow for a house.

Connecticut credits your trade-in against the sales tax

Trading a car in here reduces the amount sales tax is charged on, so you are taxed on the price less your trade-in allowance. That is the common rule, but it is not universal — a handful of states tax the full sticker price regardless, and the calculator below applies whichever rule is actually Connecticut’s.

Local tax in Connecticut

Connecticut has no local sales taxes — 6.35% is the full rate. A higher LUXURY rate of 7.75% applies to vehicles registered as passenger or combination where the total cost exceeds $50,000, and per CT DMV the $50,000 threshold is tested against the sale price BEFORE any trade-in reduction even though the trade-in still reduces the amount the rate applies to. Separately, Connecticut municipalities levy a recurring annual motor vehicle property tax.
