What a financed car actually costs out the door in Florida — the sales tax this state really charges, whether it credits your trade-in, and what the payment does to what you can borrow for a house.

Florida credits your trade-in against the sales tax

Trading a car in here reduces the amount sales tax is charged on, so you are taxed on the price less your trade-in allowance. That is the common rule, but it is not universal — a handful of states tax the full sticker price regardless, and the calculator below applies whichever rule is actually Florida’s.

Local tax in Florida

Counties may levy a discretionary sales surtax of 0.5% to 2%. Critically for vehicles, the surtax applies ONLY to the first $5,000 of the purchase price, so its contribution is capped at $100 even at a 2% rate. The surtax is sourced to the purchaser's residence address on the registration or title, not the dealer's location. The 6% state rate applies to the entire sales price with no cap. County rates are republished each November on Form DR-15DSS.
