Kansas auto loan calculator

What a financed car actually costs out the door in Kansas — the sales tax this state really charges, whether it credits your trade-in, and what the payment does to what you can borrow for a house.

Kansas credits your trade-in against the sales tax

Trading a car in here reduces the amount sales tax is charged on, so you are taxed on the price less your trade-in allowance. That is the common rule, but it is not universal — a handful of states tax the full sticker price regardless, and the calculator below applies whichever rule is actually Kansas’s.

Local tax in Kansas

Counties, incorporated cities and special taxing districts may add local sales tax of 0.10% to 3%. Local tax is substantial here — combined rates commonly run 7.5% to 9%+ (Kansas DOR's own example: Garden City at 8.95% = 6.50% state + 1.45% county + 1.00% city). SOURCING RULE THAT MATTERS: for a dealer purchase the rate is the combined rate at the DEALER'S place of business, not the buyer's address; for private-party sales it is the rate where the sale was made. Kansas also levies a separate annual motor vehicle property tax collected at registration.
