Maryland auto loan calculator

What a financed car actually costs out the door in Maryland — the sales tax this state really charges, whether it credits your trade-in, and what the payment does to what you can borrow for a house.

Maryland credits your trade-in against the sales tax

Trading a car in here reduces the amount sales tax is charged on, so you are taxed on the price less your trade-in allowance. That is the common rule, but it is not universal — a handful of states tax the full sticker price regardless, and the calculator below applies whichever rule is actually Maryland’s.

Local tax in Maryland

Maryland does not apply its ordinary sales and use tax to a vehicle purchase; the MVA collects a vehicle EXCISE (titling) tax at titling instead. As of 2025-07-01 the rate is 6.5% for non-rental vehicles, raised from 6.0% by the Budget Reconciliation and Financing Act of 2025 (HB 352, Ch. 604); qualifying rental vehicles are 3.5%. There is no county or municipal add-on. A minimum taxable value of $640 applies to recently purchased vehicles and to vehicles seven years or older. Manufacturer rebates ARE included in the taxable price; dealer rebates and discounts are not.
