What a financed car actually costs out the door in Ohio — the sales tax this state really charges, whether it credits your trade-in, and what the payment does to what you can borrow for a house.

Ohio credits your trade-in against the sales tax

Trading a car in here reduces the amount sales tax is charged on, so you are taxed on the price less your trade-in allowance. That is the common rule, but it is not universal — a handful of states tax the full sticker price regardless, and the calculator below applies whichever rule is actually Ohio’s.

Local tax in Ohio

The 5.75% state rate is combined with a county permissive tax and, in some areas, a transit authority tax. On a motor vehicle the tax is owed at the rate for the PURCHASER'S COUNTY OF RESIDENCE, not the dealer's location; current rates are published quarterly by the Department of Taxation. Ohio also caps the dealer documentary service charge under ORC 4517.261, but at a figure the registrar re-computes every September 30 (CPI-indexed off a $250/July-2006 base, and also capped at 10% of the contract amount) rather than a fixed amount — a formula is not a number, so docFeeCap is omitted.
