Local tax in Vermont

Vermont taxes vehicles under a distinct DMV-administered Motor Vehicle Purchase and Use Tax (32 V.S.A. ch. 219), not the general sales and use tax, and there is no local add-on to it — Vermont's 1% local option tax attaches to the sales/use, meals, rooms and alcohol taxes instead. Short-term rentals of pleasure cars are taxed separately at 9% of the rental charge. A maximum tax of $2,486 applies to heavier classes (trucks of 10,100 lb curb weight or more, and trailers); pleasure cars, motorcycles and motor homes are uncapped. LEASE CAVEAT: Vermont taxes a lease up front on acquisition cost MINUS lease-end value — neither the payment stream nor the vehicle's full value — so leaseTaxMethod is omitted as the lesser error.
