Local tax in West Virginia
West Virginia taxes vehicles through a titling privilege tax collected by the DMV, not the general consumer sales tax, and municipal sales taxes do not attach — 6% is the single statewide rate. A vehicle with a net purchase price under $500 pays a flat $30 instead. LEASES are taxed on the PAYMENT STREAM rather than at titling: W. Va. Code s. 17A-3-4 taxes 'the monthly payments for the lease of any motor vehicle leased by a resident of West Virginia ... applied to each payment, and continuing for the entire term of the initial lease period', remitted monthly by the lessor, for written leases running more than thirty days. The rate the rendered code text gives for lease payments is five percent, which may be as stale as the purchase rate below — verify before relying on it.
