Wyoming taxes the car every year, not just at purchase

A recurring annual tax on the vehicle’s value applies here — assessed at 60% of value at a representative 3% rate. It never appears in a monthly payment and is easy to miss when comparing states.SCHEMA FIT CAVEAT — read before using. Wyoming's recurring annual vehicle tax is the county registration fee under W.S. 31-3-101(a)(i), computed as 3% of a declining percentage of the vehicle's FACTORY PRICE (original MSRP plus special equipment), not of current market value. The 60% here is the first-year figure; the statutory schedule runs 60%, 50%, 40%, 30%, 20%, then 15% from the sixth year on, each multiplied by 3% or $5.00 whichever is greater. So a first-year vehicle effectively pays 1.8% of MSRP, falling to 0.45% from year six. The 3% is a uniform statutory rate statewide rather than a locality-set mill rate, despite being called a county fee, and it is separate from and additional to the $30 state registration fee.

Local tax in Wyoming

A 4% state sales/use tax, collected not by the dealer but by the county treasurer before first registration. Counties may add a 1% general purpose option tax and a 1% specific purpose option tax, so combined rates run 4% to 6%; a few counties add an economic development tax of 0.25% to 0.5%, and two resort districts (Teton Village, Grand Targhee) add 2% for vendors physically inside them, reaching 8%. Rates move as county options are voted up or down. For calculation: documentary/dealer fees, incoming freight, accessories, preparation and handling, and standard warranties are INCLUDED in the taxable price; titling and licensing fees, outgoing freight and extended warranties are excluded. Payment is due within 65 days of purchase.
