Nebraska credits your trade-in against the sales tax

Trading a car in here reduces the amount sales tax is charged on, so you are taxed on the price less your trade-in allowance. That is the common rule, but it is not universal — a handful of states tax the full sticker price regardless, and the calculator below applies whichever rule is actually Nebraska’s.

Local tax in Nebraska

The state rate is 5.5% and local sales taxes add up to 2.5% more, so combined rates reach roughly 8% in the highest-rate municipalities. Nebraska additionally imposes a separate annual MOTOR VEHICLE TAX (an MSRP-bracket base tax reduced by an age schedule) and a MOTOR VEHICLE FEE (based on value, weight and use) at initial registration and each year until the vehicle turns 14 — both distinct from the sales tax and the $15 registration fee, and together the largest recurring vehicle cost in Nebraska.
