Local tax in Rhode Island
Single statewide 7%; Rhode Island municipalities add no local sales tax to a vehicle purchase. IMPORTANT: the recurring municipal motor vehicle excise tax ('car tax') NO LONGER EXISTS. The phase-out under RIGL ch. 44-34.1 was accelerated in the FY2023 budget and the tax ended a year early, so there is no annual value-based vehicle tax in Rhode Island for 2026.
