Rhode Island credits your trade-in against the sales tax

Trading a car in here reduces the amount sales tax is charged on, so you are taxed on the price less your trade-in allowance. That is the common rule, but it is not universal — a handful of states tax the full sticker price regardless, and the calculator below applies whichever rule is actually Rhode Island’s.

Local tax in Rhode Island

Single statewide 7%; Rhode Island municipalities add no local sales tax to a vehicle purchase. IMPORTANT: the recurring municipal motor vehicle excise tax ('car tax') NO LONGER EXISTS. The phase-out under RIGL ch. 44-34.1 was accelerated in the FY2023 budget and the tax ended a year early, so there is no annual value-based vehicle tax in Rhode Island for 2026.
